RENEW recently participated in a project to help stabilize the middle market in Afghanistan. In collaboration with local stakeholders, private investors and partner organizations, including IBM and The Clearing, RENEW aims to have a sustainable impact on Afghanistan’s middle market.
The project focused on the information communications technology (ICT) sector in the Herat and Kabul. Herat City, where the project is based, is a stable, secure and thriving metropolis. The project team:
1. Developed a strong network of local partners
2. Learned about the local ICT market
3. Built a portfolio of promising small to medium-sized businesses
As part of the project, investors had access to in-country due diligence support, deal structuring and a number of other traditional fund management services. Additionally, customized incentives and insurance products were developed to offset risks for investors.
