Rwanda - Ag/Manufacturing - Silk Production

This SME has four separate potential investments in the silk and fiber value chain, managed together through vertical integration. All are related to the production of silk and fibers for use as anti-malarial bednets and temporary housing tents, for which there is significant unmet demand in Rwanda and East Africa. The SME hopes to extend the benefits provided by international organizations working to stop the spread of malaria by serving as a local supplier for the products they require.

Silk Production
$5m is requested to expand silk production operations. The project will employ 3000 farmers to produce the silk, and 750 workers to process the crop into a useful product. In four years time, the opportunity projects exports of $15m per year. Product will be branded and training will be given to local producers to ensure quality. Additionally, investment will be used to purchase 500 hectares of land for cultivation. The farmers will utilize waste from other crops, such as mushrooms, thereby decreasing waste and contamination that may have been caused by fertilizers.
