This SME has four separate potential investments in the silk and fiber value chain, managed together through vertical integration. All are related to the production of silk and fibers for use as anti-malarial bednets and temporary housing tents, for which there is significant unmet demand in Rwanda and East Africa. The SME hopes to extend the benefits provided by international organizations working to stop the spread of malaria by serving as a local supplier for the products they require.

Anti-Malarial Bed Net Manufacturing
Rwanda has unmet demand for 3m bed nets per year, bordering countries have unmet demand of 40m, and SSA has unmet demand of 300m. Global production capacity is only meets 50% of current demand. The opportunity plans to utilize $15m of investment to produce 12m bed nets per year. Because the opportunity currently has unused, excess manufacturing capacity, the investment compares very favorably to others which project a financing requirement of $30m to produce 15m nets. The project can reach full production in 2012. Additionally, if necessary the project has anticipated and planned for scaling to 40m nets.
