This SME recycles or refurbishes used and obsolete computers and peripherals. Whenever possible, computers are refurbished and when necessary, upgraded, to reenter the local market through resale. Remaining computers and peripherals are recycled for rare metals and other valuable material that is sold via exports.
In most western nations, used computer equipment is a waste product, as it is not profitable to recycle. However, because Uganda has a market for lower-performance but functional used computers, and because of the lower costs of business operation, the SME can operate at a profit while providing the social good of recycling discarded computers and providing computers to East Africans who might not otherwise be able to afford a new system, thereby increasing the efficiency of other local businesses.
The SME seeks $1.5m to expand operational capacity, with a projected IRR of 30% over 5 years.
