Looking to Rwanda
While the US offers many reasons to be thankful and celebrate this Holiday season, most agree that the country is not without its share of worries and wonderment. Stimulating the economy weighs heavily this shopping season as U.S. leaders look for solutions. One writer suggests the U.S. look to Rwanda, where the ease of starting a business ranks equal with America according to the World Bank's 2011 rankings.
Equal? Yes.
Rwanda has enacted a host of incentives and regulatory provisions to keep their projected 7% growth going strong in the new year.
Rwanda - Forestry - Sustainable Bamboo
The SME will establish a plant propagation nursery, tissue culture lab, and plantation to grow (primarily) bamboo seedlings for commercial use. Currently 80% of seedlings used in Rwanda are imported, and often of poor quality. The SME seeks investment to utilize Rwanda’s fertile soil and high demand to create a profitable business, increase supply of seedlings, create jobs, raise per capita income, increase food production, and educate and train local farmers on modern agricultural techniques.
Rwanda - Manufacturing - Tent Production
This SME has four separate potential investments in the silk and fiber value chain, managed together through vertical integration. All are related to the production of silk and fibers for use as anti-malarial bednets and temporary housing tents, for which there is significant unmet demand in Rwanda and East Africa. The SME hopes to extend the benefits provided by international organizations working to stop the spread of malaria by serving as a local supplier for the products they require.
